Coach Profile: Aled Morrow-Powell
Get to know Aled, one of our valued coaches at CrossFit Wrexham.
Why did you decide to become a coach at CrossFit Wrexham?
From day one, I knew that CFW was different from all the other gyms I had been to. So many people took the time to say “Hi” and make me feel welcome even before my induction. My first class was a nerve-racking experience made easier by the coach and class members. Everyone was so helpful, made me feel reassured in my choice to sign up. As I was coming to the end of the first year as I member, I thought I’d love to be able to take my experience as a school teacher into CrossFit Coaching, and this was when the internships were made available. I jumped at the chance and glad I did. I’m constantly learning, being challenged and facing some fears - but what better place to do so. Having the support from not only the rest of the coaching team, but from members, has improved my confidence and has pushed me to continue to improve daily as a coach.
What are your goals as a coach?
My goal when I am coaching is always to give everyone a positive, but challenging and fun experience. Leaving the session like they have worked hard, but also with a smile on their face. I want to continue developing across all areas of coaching, but particularly in weightlifting and gymnastics.
What is your favourite CrossFit workout?
It would have to be Angie: 100 pull ups, 100 push ups, 100 sit ups and 100 squats.
This one really challenges me mentally as there are so many reps. It’s good because with it being for time, it gives you something to aim for next time. A true test of gymnastic fitness.
What are your training goals for 2025?
For me, my focus is on continuously improving my mobility to increase the range of motion I have in my joint. Continuing to gain a greater understanding of movement to optimise my form and improve my flexibility, will allow me to improve my capacity and capability across the board.
What are your favourite things to do outside the gym?
When I’m not building something on my small holding, I like to travel. I got the travel bug after spending 10 years on the road when I left home at 18 for Canada, Now I aim to experience as many countries as I can with my family. I also love to cook, and one of the jobs I had whilst living in Greece was a chef! Then, living with an Italian American family in New York for years, food and cooking became a major part of the day. Spending time with the family is also something I enjoy, but need to do more of.
