Gym Etiquette

Every day we aim to be a welcoming, friendly and safe place for anyone keen to improve their health and fitness to train. As with any strong community, it’s important to have clear expectations, to ensure everyone gets along and so everyone is safe when they train. This is a summary of some of the expectations for Health & Safety and Gym Etiquette, so you can help us keep the gym running smoothly, and to help ensure it remains a welcoming, safe and fun place to train.

Health & Safety

  1. Keep us updated on any injuries or health conditions that we might need to know about if you have an accident at the gym. For example: diabetes, heart conditions, pacemakers, allergies, etc. Just send an email to hello@crossfitwrexham.com

  2. If you are proactively working on rehabilitating an injury, acute or chronic, let us know, so we can provide suitable alternatives to movements you are avoiding in class. We are very used to doing this.

  3. Pop your gym bags in a cubby hole or in the changing rooms, and keep kit on the gym floor to a minimum.  Be safe.  If you are moving around the gym, be aware of others, train safe and smart, don't leave excess kit out for others to trip on, and be mindful of people lifting – don’t walk in front or too close behind.

  4. Walk to the start of the running route if it’s wet and slippery outside, and when running into/out of the gym check the mirror to see if anyone is coming in order to avoid collisions.

  5. If you rip your hands or bleed anywhere, please tell a coach as we need to clean the area/kit immediately.

  6. If you make a sweaty mess, we'd ask you to grab the Dettol bottle and some white roll and mop up after you - then bring a sweat towel with you to dab your brow in future ;-)

  7. If there is a fire alarm, please leave by the nearest exit, don't grab your personal belongings, and don't re-enter the gym until you are informed that it is safe to do so. We run regular weekly fire alarm tests on a Friday AM - anyone in the gym will be made aware. At any other time, it is not a test. Just walk calmly out of the gym and meet on the grass by the main road entrance.

Gym Etiquette

  1. Only pack kit away when everyone has finished the workout.  Being the last athlete working while others are putting stuff away and fist bumping can be demoralising for some.  If you finish before others, give those still working some encouragement!

  2. We ask everyone to brush down barbells to remove chalk and keep them looking like new, and to not use liquid chalk.

  3. We ask that all kit is put back in its place, nice and tidy, so it's easy for the next person to find. The racks have labels for the Dumbbell weights, and are colour coded for the Kettlebells.

  4. We ask that you don't drop empty barbells, because it damages the bearings - new barbells are circa £300.

  5. We ask that you use Open Gym for strength and skill work, and movement practice.  Please don’t use Open Gym for WODs.

  6. If you want to do Open Gym before or after class, please make sure you book in and ensure there is space. First come first served, as we have limited space.

  7. Class will always take priority over Open Gym for kit and floor space.

  8. If you are using Open Gym when a class is on, please be respectful of the coach and class members.  Loud background conversation, barbells being dropped or ERG fans can make it very hard for coaches to be heard or hear.  This is especially important during the class brief and when movements are being coached.

  9. If anything is broken in the gym, please let us know so we can fix it.  If we've run out to toilet paper, hand soap or chalk, let us know so we can replace it.

  10. Whilst on the topic of toilets - if you do it, flush it. If you leave a skid mess, scrub it. If it smells, spray it. Aim to leave the toilets how you'd like to find them.

  11. If you have kids they are welcome to sit in the waiting area if childcare is an issue. We don't want anything to stand in the way of anyone training to be fit and healthy, and we want to set a good example to the next generation.  Please just ensure that they don't come onto the gym floor, and remember that when they are in the gym, they are still your responsibility.

  12. DON’T coach other members! Our coaches have qualifications, skills and experience to enable them to do this effectively, so let them do so.  If you think an athlete needs help in a busy class, feel free to quietly mention it to the coach if they haven’t spotted it yet.  Even coaches generally don’t coach other members when they are not the one leading the class.

Gym Communications, Tech & Social Media

  1. WodBoard is where you will receive important notifications about the gym - turn on notifications and ideally accept marketing information in your preferences.

  2. Log your workouts, comment and like other’s performances. Support one another.

  3. Feel free to record/video your lifts to see your form.

  4. Toggle on ‘Location Settings’ in your phone settings for the WodBoard App to ‘Always On’ - this will automatically check you into class. If you are doing Open Gym nudge a coach to check you in, especially if you arrive after class has started.

  5. Follow us on Instagram @crossfitwrexham for less important News & Updates, plus tag us in all your CrossFit or Fitness content so we can share and inspire others.

Most of all - have fun, work hard, make friends, and look out for each other. We strive every day to make sure everyone feels welcome and accepted, by fostering a positive, non-judgemental and supportive environment to workout in. Everyone is pushing to be fitter, healthier, happier and more capable humans, so please help us to continue to nurture this inclusive culture.

And if you need anything at all, membership related or otherwise - just ask. Email hello@crossfitwrexham.com
